Roy Rebergen
‘King of Quip’
Actor - visual artist - photographer
Born: Roy Rebergen, Beverwijk, The Netherlands, January 30, 1966
The family of Roy Rebergen migrated from the Netherlands by way of Indonesia to Canada in 1981. After graduating from high school Roy contemplated becoming a tennis player, a painter or a lawyer. He moved to California, where he attended UCLA on a sports scholarship and also took acting classes. He accepted a role as a dislocated youth in the daytime soap As The World Turns, a faux pas he would like to forget. He dropped out of college in 1986 and started traveling around the world, ending up in Amsterdam, where he enrolled as an art student in the Rijksacademie. In 1991 Roy returned to Los Angeles, where he landed a role as a righteous attorney in the TV series LA Law, which he managed to carry off for one season. Roy Rebergen's various appearances in TV dramas and series brought him enough notice to earn him his first film contract, the weak adventure comedy, Billy Hell (1992). In spite of his disastrous film debut, Roy Rebergen's career picked up rapidly with catching roles in No Mountain High Enough (1994); The Sigma Chi Darling (1993); and Hell's Anteroom (1994). But his blast to fame and his claim to being a true box-office magnet came in the form of that bitingly funny parody on the 'hunh' and/or 'dah' generation, NUPPIE (1995).
Aside from his phenomenal yet peculiarly paradoxical acting style of itchy light irony and dark feline menace, Roy is a unique sculptor, painter and photographer. He has made many masterfully lighted set photographs from the most unusual angles and some avant-garde shorts and animations. As he is very photogenic, he, in turn, has been the object of many artists and photographers. Roy is a no nonsense guy, a goofy prankster and a fitness fanatic, as he is an amazingly expert tennis player, golfer, swimmer, short-track runner, polevaulter, racing and cross-country biker, speed skater, mountaineer, hang glider, sky diver, surfer, skier and snowboarder. As he has had many accidents, in his contracts there is a standard clause forbidding Roy to engage in any risky exercise just before and during a shoot.
With his boyishly handsome looks, of course, Roy is a great Casanova as evident from his long list of exquisitely talented girlfriends, amongst others, independent filmmaker, Liz Dean, hot-babe actress, Anita Carbajal, and the dynamic trumpeter-composer, Naomi Wright-Koundé.
